We offer internship opportunities for college students to learn what it’s like to work at the Dubuque Rescue Mission. Below are our standard opportunities, and we are open to customizing to meet your interests or internship requirements.

Social Work Intern
The Social Work Intern is a collaborative position between the Dubuque Rescue Mission and the college where the student is enrolled. At the Rescue Mission, the Intern is responsible to the Case Manager or, in their absence, the Program Manager. This is a part-time (10 hour/week) position, with hours to be determined in collaboration with the Case Manager. This position collaborates closely with the Case Manager and with local social service agencies to meet the case management needs of Mission Main Street residents, including brain and physical health, identification documentation, employment, housing, and financial management. In addition, this position provides case management services and referrals to other guests (non-residents) visiting the Mission when possible.
Responsibilities
- Greet residents and visitors to the Mission with charity, kindness, and respect.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere and spirit of community collaboration within the Mission Main Street campus, and the Mission as a whole.
- Maintain open communication with Resident Manager and Third Floor staff regarding case management needs of residents.
- Stay in touch with entire Mission management team as pertains to resident well-being.
- Prioritize and maintain resident confidentiality, communicating only what is necessary, legal, and appropriate.
- Schedule and conduct meetings with residents in need of social services, as identified in collaboration with the Case Manager.
- Keep detailed and confidential case notes on Mission residents.
- Make and follow up on social services appointments for residents. Serve as point of contact with outside agencies regarding residents, if residents provide written consent.

Biology or Agronomy Intern
The Agronomy Intern is responsible to the Garden Manager or in their absence, the Kitchen Manager. This is a 10 hour/week position, with hours to be determined in collaboration with the Garden Manager. This schedule will include weekend responsibilities to be shared with Garden Manager or others assisting at the gardens.
Responsibilities
- Greet residents and visitors to the Mission and Mission Garden with charity, kindness, and respect.
- Work in collaboration with the Garden Manager to plan and execute strategies for crops grown outside and in the greenhouse.
- Work in collaboration with the Garden Manager and Kitchen staff to plan and execute a preservation program for crop utilization outside the growing season.
- Work in collaboration with the Garden Manager to plan and execute garden construction projects.
- Consistently record garden data on planting, care, and harvest of crops for subsequent crop planning and evaluation of production strategies.
- Provide leadership and promote skill development to Mission residents assigned to the Garden as well as volunteers.
- Work in collaboration with Kitchen staff to plan and execute use of Garden harvests at every meal when possible.
- Work independently to bring Kitchen waste to Garden and incorporate into Garden compost system.
- During winter months, work in collaboration with Kitchen staff to prepare meals and prioritize serving vegetables.
- Support the work of other departments as a member of the larger Mission team upon request.

Store 1 Intern
The Store 1 Intern is a collaborative position between the Dubuque Rescue Mission and the college where the student is enrolled. At the Rescue Mission, the Intern is responsible to the Store 1 Manager or, in their absence, the Program Manager. This is a part-time (10 hour/week) position, with hours to be determined in collaboration with the Store 1 Manager. This position focuses primarily on Store 1 sales and marketing goals, in addition to assisting with daily Store 1 operations.
Responsibilities
- Greet residents and visitors to the Mission with charity, kindness, and respect.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere and spirit of community collaboration within the Mission Store 1, and the Mission as a whole.
- Work independently to provide customer service at Store 1: answer questions, accept donations, etc.
- Work independently to issue donation receipts, complete sales transactions, and run the cash register.
- Work in collaboration with the Store 1 Manager to create marketing materials for present and upcoming Store 1 events and programs.
- Work independently to transport inter-office memos and inventory between Store 1 and Store 2.
- Provide leadership and promote skill development to Mission residents assigned to Store 1 as well as volunteers.
- Work in collaboration with the Store 1 Manager to recruit, manage, and train volunteers.
- Work in collaboration with the Store 1 Manager to develop data collection and metric systems for donations, purchases, events, and store traffic.

Store 2 Intern

This is a part-time (10 hour/week) position, with hours to be determined in collaboration with the Store 2 Manager. Theology Intern
The Theology Intern is a collaborative position between the Dubuque Rescue Mission and the college where the student is enrolled. At the Rescue Mission, the Intern is responsible to the Executive Director or, in their absence, the Program Manager. This is a part-time (10 hour/week) position, with hours to be determined in collaboration with the Executive Director. This position is tasked with tending to the spiritual health of the Mission community by assisting with programming and providing a listening ear.
Responsibilities
- Greet residents and visitors to the Mission with charity, kindness, and respect.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere and spirit of community collaboration within the Dubuque Rescue Mission.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, plan and host weekly devotional services for Dubuque Rescue Mission residents.
- In collaboration with Executive Director, plan and host short daily prayer services for the public and wider Mission community.
- Work independently to plan and host occasional services at other Mission sites including our Warming Center and Garden.
- Work independently to plan and implement other spiritual programming, both formal and informal, in the Dubuque Rescue Mission dining room.
- Spend 2 hours per week in our chapel offering individual prayer and meditation sessions with Mission community members.
- Support the work of other departments as a member of the larger Mission team upon request.
